Our Impact
Our trust has had a significant impact on healthcare in Haiti through various projects aimed at making a positive difference in the world. Our efforts to contribute to one of the few hospitals in Haiti have improved access and outcomes for thousands of people in need of surgery, dialysis or dental care. Additionally, our scholarship program has helped students set their sights on higher education, receiving financial support and mentoring to help them succeed. Through these and other projects, the Bishop Esterka trust remains committed to creating meaningful change and improving the lives of individuals and communities in this counrty and in Haiti.
Health and Healing: Foundations for Change
Haiti is one of the most tragically underserved areas around the world. Through our program, we have worked closely with Deacon Joe Domond, director of the Jeff Cherubin Domond Foundation, to identify specific needs and donate the money to provide supplies ranging from basic hygiene to specialized equipment in the dialysis center in the capital of Port-au-Prince. He has written (Nov 27, 2023) that “Haitian gangs stole a container of supplies destined for our hospital in Marbial, but we are undaunted…” The goal of the Esterka Trust is to improve healthcare access and outcomes in this time and place where courageous doctors and nurses operate six machines three times a day earning just $185.00 per month. Funds are needed desperately to hire staff and purchase equipment. We have full confidence that our contributions are applied directly to the needs of the poor in Haiti.
Scholarship
Our mission is inspired by Bishop Esterka’s legacy, dedicated to expanding educational opportunities for deserving youth. Bishop Esterka, whose own educational journey was halted by oppressive regimes, believed in the power of higher education to overcome societal barriers. In his honor, our Trust supports students pursuing their dreams at their chosen universities, regardless of financial constraints. We’ve already assisted seven students across diverse fields like Nursing, Computer Science, and Engineering, with more on their path to university acceptance. We’ve Donated over $1,500,000
Our contribution, alongside the remarkable support from the Bishop Peter Esterka Trust, totaling nearly two million dollars over the past three years, has laid the groundwork for life-saving healthcare developments. This funding has enabled the construction of essential medical facilities within a Catholic hospital deep in Haiti’s interior, including a state-of-the-art Surgery Center, a vital Dialysis Center, and a soon-to-be-completed Dental Care unit.
Scholarships
- Alice is the first of her extended family to be born in this country and to attend college. After successfully completing a BS degree at the University of California-Long Beach, her dream was to become a registered nurse. She was blocked by the need to keep a full time job for her own support and to help support her grandparents, mother and two brothers. She is supremely qualified for a position in healthcare by way of her own temperament, compassionate and serene bearing, and her experience with temporary work in home nursing. With a full scholarship, she is now two thirds of the way to achieving her goal by attending an accelerated nursing program in California.
- Bob is a young man who took off a year after high school to try to figure out his next steps. He was attracted to a career in computing but could only afford Community College tuition. He is now preparing with enthusiasm for the major he needs to succeed.
- Cecil is a young man who always wanted to be an engineer, but was about to give up on those desires. He needed a job to help his family and he could not make enough to pursue a college education at the same time. He is now enrolled in a program for civil engineering at a respected institution.
- Dominik wanted to spend his time learning about film and film-making. When he was given the opportunity, he was overjoyed.
